KOCHI: The 110 kV hybrid sub-station at the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) was inaugurated by Power Minister Aryadan Mohammed on Monday. Excise Minister K Babu, who is also the director of CIAL, said that the hybrid sub-station will ensure uninterrupted power supply to the airport.In the wake of the acute power shortage faced by the state, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) will soon venture into alternative methods of power generation such as solar power and wind energy, said Aryadan Mohammed. As a pilot project, rooftop solar panels will be fixed in 10,000 houses in the state to produce a combined power of 10 MW this year, he added. If found successful, the project will be implemented in 1 lakh homes to generate 100 MW power next year, said Aryadan.The hybrid station, constructed using `22 crore, uses imported pass system (plug and switch system) which is completely automatic and hence ensures uninterrupted power supply. The system which has the features of both normal and gas insulated sub-stations, costs `4 crore. Another special feature of the hybrid sub-station is that it can be constructed on a small area, within an acre space. The sub-station, designed by KITCO, is equipped to deal with the power requirements of CIAL for the next 15-20 years, said CIAL officials. The sub-station is controlled by the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) facility. The power station is also equipped with a diesel generator set and two back-up transformers for the control room. The transformers were constructed by the Transformers and Electricals Kerala Limited (TELK) at a cost of `4.25 crore. The sub-station receives power from the Kalamassery-Chalakkudy feeder line. 11 towers have been set up within an area of 2 km for the purpose. CIAL has handed over `3.5 crore to the KSEB for the project so far.
