Pondicherry Launching his poll campaign, cine actor and leader of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, Vijaykanth has accused the Congress government of not initiating steps for development of the Union Territory.

Vijaykanth started his electioneering by addressing a meeting after garlanding the statue of veteran actor Sivaji Ganesan at Karuvadikuppam.

Expressing concern over "lack of specific and effective plan" to promote tourism here, the actor said although there was an airstrip in Pondicherry nothing had been done to expand it and keep it active.

He claimed that the huge chunk of funds allotted by the Centre was not utilised by the government.

Although there were several government-run hospitals, no attention was given to improve the facilities and people had to rush to Chennai for advanced treatments, he said.

Blaming the previous DMK and Congress governments for not taking enough steps to develop Pondicherry, he said DMDK would strive hard for the well being of the people.

Among those who accompanied Vijaykanth during poll campaign included former Tamil Nadu minister Panruti Ramachandran and DMDK Pondicherry leader Velu.

DMDK had earlier announced that the party would go it alone in the Assembly polls.
