Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Saturday allocated Rs 1,000 crore for constructing one lakh concrete houses for the people affected by cyclone Thane in December last.
Considering the extent of damages caused by cyclone Thane, 90,000 new concrete houses would be constructed in Cuddalore district and 10,000 in Villupuram district. Each house would have a built up area of 200 sq ft and have a bedroom, a kitchen and a toilet. The cost per house has been pegged at Rs 1 lakh.
Cyclone Thane severely affected infrastructure facilities, standing crops, houses and boats, besides property and livelihood resources of the people in Cuddalore and Villupuram districts.
As part of the relief and restoration work, the chief minister had announced the construction of one lakh permanent houses for them at a cost of Rs 1,000 crore.
