Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the Onam regatta ‘Jalotsavam 2012’, here on August 25.
The multi-class yachting competition, which will see over 100 participants from across the country, is expected to promote water tourism. The Kerala Watersports and Sailing Organisation is joining hands with the Tourism Department to conduct the event.
George Thomas, Kerala Watersports and Sailing Organisation committee chairman, said that the event will be flagged off on August 25 and will conclude on August 29. Minister for Tourism Anil Kumar, Vice-Admiral Sathish Sony, Flag Officer Commanding-in- Chief of the Southern Naval Command here,
KTDC managing director N Prashant, Secretary of Kerala Tourism Suman Billai will also be present.
“It is for the first time in India that a regatta is being conducted under seven classes, including the Optimist, Laser 47, Radial, Hobie Cat, Windsurf, 29 ER, and Hobie class yacht,” George said. “The main objective of the competition is to create a passion for the water sport among public,” he added.
Each yachting event will cover a distance of 1.5 kms between Vallarpadom and Bolgatty island. Nine such events will take place, of which, each participant should compulsorily take part in eight. Hibi Eden MLA and Minister K V Thomas are the event patrons.
