HYDERABAD: The Congress party, which started the bypoll campaign relatively on a dull note, is now gradually gaining confidence on its electoral prospects as the polling date to the 18 Assembly and Nellore Lok Sabha segment is fast approaching. The reason for this sudden upbeat mood in the ruling party camp is due to speeding up of the investigation into YSR Congress chief Jagan’s illegal assets case by the CBI. Since the CBI froze several bank accounts of the companies owned by Jagan and his family, the Congress leaders feel that it will not be a cakewalk for Jagan to campaign aggressively in the present bypolls, as he did in Kovuru and Kadapa byelections held recently with ‘money power.’ Ruling party leaders were also of the opinion that in the wake of the ongoing probe into the Jagan’s assets case, people are gradually coming to know the truths about the Kadapa MP. “Hence, voters may not vote for Jagan blindly in the present bypolls, said a former minister. Meanwhile, all the senior leaders in the Congress including chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and PCC chief Botcha Satyanarayana have upped their ante against Jagan during the campaign trail. These leaders are leaving no stone unturned to expose the corruption charges of Jagan. Apart from this, the chief minister is also trying to expose the shallowness in the claims of Jagan that welfare programmes in the state have taken a backseat after the demise of former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy. To convince the voters Kiran Kumar Reddy is trying to compare various welfare schemes being implemented in his government with programmes of the erstwhile YSR regime. “All these days we are not confident of winning the bypolls. We are not sure of retaining at least four to five seats in the 18 Assembly segments, which were held by the Congress in the 2009 elections. But, in the wake of the all-round attack launched by the government against the YSR Congress, we are sure that we will fare well in these polls”, said a senior leader in the Congress.Even the AICC emissary Vayalar Ravi is also believed to be happy with the present political developments in the state as the poll date is drawing closer. Vayalar Ravi said that the Congress party was gradually getting stronger in the 18 Assembly segments when compared to his previous visit to the state. “The Congress party would definitely put up a good show in the byelections. I am hopeful of winning majority seats in the present polls,” the AICC emissary said.
