Contempt hearing against Modi on Tuesday
Modi had apparently disclosed details of his correspondence with the state governor to the PM on an issue that was already pending before the High Court.

New Delhi: Two petitions filed against Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi are likely to come up for hearing in the High Court on Tuesday. The petitions were filed against Modi for criminal contempt of court as he allegedly disclosed contents of his correspondence with the Gujarat governor on the appointment of the state Lokayukta to the Prime Minister, even when the matter was already pending before the High Court.

Modi had apparently challenged the appointment of retired Justice RA Mehta as the state Lokayukta by Governor Kamla Beniwal in August last year. Modi accused Beniwal of not consulting him before appointing Mehta.

However, even as the matter was pending before the High Court, Modi shot off a letter to the Prime Minister, disclosing the details of his correspondence with the governor.

The petitioners accuse Modi of criminal contempt of court, for disclosing the content of his correspondence with the governor, on a matter already pending before the HC.

A division bench of the High Court had earlier adjourned the hearing in the case to January 17.
