CHENNAI: With a view to minimising electricity bill, Chennai Corporation would introduce solar lights with Light Emitting Diode (LED) fittings soon in nine zones, Mayor M Subramanian said on Tuesday.After the council meeting, Subramanian told reporters, “The move will save 5,71,261 units of electricity for the civic body and Rs30 lakh annually towards to Electricity Board bill.”Civic body has already identified spots to install these sophisticated lights and 2,795 such lights will be procured at a cost of Rs 7.54 crore under the JNNURM’s BSUP phase-II scheme.Besides giving its nod to the programme, the Corporation also passed resolutions admitting the consultation report for the beautification of historical Victoria Public Hall and also extended the tenure for contractors working on flyovers and a subway projects progressing at four places in city.The civic body also gave its go ahead to construct new storm water drains (after demolishing the old ones) in Saidapet at a cost of Rs 1.25 crore.Earlier in the day, Councillors of Left parties (Devi and Meena) slammed the Corporation for the poor maintenance of crematoriums at burial grounds and alleged lack of transparency and misuse of revolving funds issued for self-help groups under the central government supported schemes. They requested the Mayor to look in to the issue, as there were mass discrepancies in the beneficiaries list.
