New Delhi: An Ahmedabad court on Wednesday reserved its order on the bail application submitted by suspended IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt till October 17. Bhatt was arrested on the September 30 for allegedly forcing a junior officer to file a false affidavit against Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
Earlier, 35 members of the IPS Officers' Association resolved to support Bhatt's family, many calling it the first such act of defiance in Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's 10 year long regime.
In fact, more and more cops openly expressed their support for Bhatt, who took on Modi over his alleged role in the 2002 riots.
Retired Gujarat police chief RB Sreekumar, who was also allegedly victimized for taking an anti-Modi stand, says this is a significant change.
"This act of the IPS officers will act as a deterrence against such actions in future," he said.
Shweta Bhatt, Wife of Sanjeev Bhatt, said, "I am very happy with the kind of support and it's good to see that the officers are united."
Bhatt has been booked for wrongful restraint and fabricating evidence. Police had raided his residence twice within 24 hours to look for 'false affidavits'.
On October 1, Bhatt's wife Shweta had alleged police harassment while claiming that no one was allowed to meet him. On the same date, Ahmedabad court dismissed the police remand extension and sent Bhatt to judicial custody.
Shweta also wrote two letters to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram seeking his intervention in ensuring the safety and the liberty of her husband.
She had expressed fear that more false cases might be slapped against Sanjeev Bhatt.
