PUDUCHERRY: Communist Party of India (CPI) will support the All India Namathu Rajyam Congress (AINRC) candidate Tamil Selvane in the by-election for Indira Nagar assembly constituency, scheduled to be held on October 13.CPI state secretary Na Ra Kalainathan told reporters here on Thursday that the decision was taken at the party state council and executive meetings, chaired by B Anand. He said that the AIADMK with which CPI was in alliance in the April 13 assembly elections,  was not clear about their electoral understanding with AINRC. He added that this was against the political alliance culture.Explaining his party’s decision further, Kalainathan, who addressed reporters along with national council member R Viswanathan, said his party wanted to defeat the Congress candidate in the three-way contest. He said that the Congress was immersed in various corruption allegations like the 2-G spectrum, Adarsh housing scam and the Commonwealth Games. The Congress-led UPA government has not taken steps to curb price rise, he added.Charging that the central government had reduced the quota of kerosene, wheat and rice to Puducherry, the CPI leader said the Congress government did not allot enough funds for development.    Saying that the CPI had taken the decision to back NR Congress candidate in view of the current political situation in the union territory, Kalainathan revealed that his party would not campaign jointly with the AINRC, but would hold campaigns independently. He added that a seven-member committee comprising Sethuselvan, Kannan, Balaraman, Viswanathan, Rajagopal, Jayapal and Vijayan had been formed for the purpose.Asked whether AINRC had sought the support of CPI for the by-elections, he said his party had taken a decision because of the political situation and the support extended was only for the by-poll.Na Ra Kalainathan said his party expects AINRC to implement people-oriented schemes and would not hesitate to agitate against the government if it goes ahead with any anti-people  policies..
