KOCHI: Merriment and music will envelop Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) with the university set for ‘Sargam-’12’, the cultural extravaganza that will be held from March 1 to 5.The Cusat Students Union is busy making arrangements for the grand event which will witness more than 3,000 participants vying for the coveted overall trophy.“More students are expected to take part in the event with grace marks being introduced from this year - 3 per cent marks for those who come first, 2 per cent and one per cent for those coming second and third respectively,” said Aadish Ajayakumar, University Union chairman.Around 28 colleges from across the state have geared up to participate in 65 events - 48 individual and 17 group items. Contests will be held in 19 literary events, 10 fine arts items, 15 music items, 14 dance items and seven theatre events.“We have not introduced any new event this year. We are going by the dictates of the National Youth Festival and have reduced the items from more than 70 to 65 as per the National Youth Festival norms,” Aadish said.“Preparations are on to provide accommodation for all the guests on the campus. Stages are being readied. Seven stages have been set aside for the festival. We are setting up one make-shift stage and the rest of the stages are being readied in six auditoriums of various departments on the campus,” he said.“The estimated expense is around Rs 6.9 lakh. The University has sets apart Rs 10 lakh for the cultural festival. So funds are not a problem,” said Aadish.
