KUMAILY: Tension prevailed at Lower Camp, Periyakulam and Cumbam areas near here on Sunday following a march taken out by thousands of farmers, most of them women, from various parts of Tamil Nadu to Kumily on the Mullaperiyar dam issue.Police blocked them near Murugan Kovil here. The farmers tried to break the police cordon several times. Police also foiled an attempt by a 50-member group to reach here through forest.The traders’ organisations and their supporters also held a march on the Kerala side of the border.The Kerala police and Central Security Force personnel are camping on the border. The traffic on the Kollam-Theni National Highway came to a standstill following the closure of the Kumily check post.Ernakulam IG R Sreelekha reviewed the security arrangements in the morning and is camping in the area.The IG said that additional police force has been deployed in the area.The Tamil Nadu police have also strengthened the security arrangements on the border to foil any violent incidents. They have deployed 500 policemen in the sensitive areas. Control rooms have been opened at the Tamil Nadu border area of Gudalur.The vehicles to Sabarimala will be diverted through safe routes, officials said. Traffic on the Gudalur-Kumily route will soon become normal, they added.District police head George Varghese said that additional police have been deployed in check posts and border cities.“The situation is under control and we are monitoring the situation,” Varghese said. Idukki Collector E Devadasan said that situation is under control in the Kerala side.
