DHARMAPURI/NEW DELHI: Fourteen-year-old G Parameswaran from Dharmapuri will be one among 24 children to receive the National Bravery Award 2011 from PM Manmohan Singh on the eve of Republic Day this year. A student of the Yelagiri Government Higher Secondary School, Dharmapuri, Parameswaran rescued three girls, who were about to drown in a pond.It was on September 18, 2010 that girls from Arakkasanahalli — Uma (9), Pooja (9), Saranya (11), Arthi (10) and Bhuwaneswari (9) — were playing near a pond. Suddenly, they slipped into the pond and upon hearing their cries, Parameswaran, a Class 9 student, who was washing his clothes in a channel of the river Nagavathi, rushed to the spot and dived into the pond to rescue them, despite not knowing swimming. While he managed to rescue Arthi, Bhuwaneswari and Saranya, Uma and Pooja drowned.Of the 24 awards, five will be given posthumously. The prestigious Geeta Chopra Award will be conferred on 13- year-old girl, Mittal Mahendrabhai Patadiya of Gujarat, who faced armed miscreants and foiled a robbery attempt.Kapil Singh Negi of Uttarakhand will get the Bharat Award posthumously. The 15-year-old-boy sacrificed his life while helping his younger schoolmates to cross a flooded stream on a day of heavy rain and landslide.The Sanjay Chopra Award has been given to 12-year-old Om Prakash Yadav of UP, who saved his schoolmates from a burning van. Late Adithya Gopal (14) of Arunachal Pradesh, Uma Shankar (14) of Delhi and Anjali Singh Gautam (15) of Chhattisgarh will get the Bapu Gaidhani Awards. Adithya Gopal lost his life while trying to save his friend from drowning. Uma Shankar was instrumental in rescuing bus accident victims and helping them get medical aid, while Anjali Singh Gautam saved her brother in a Naxal attack.
