Well, you should probably try this out the next time you go shopping for Dharmavaram sarees which are woven with fragrances of flowers and sandalwood.Dharmavaram in Anantapur district which is famous for weaving silk sarees has a young weaver who is creating waves throughout the country for his unique ideas.Peddaiahagari Mohan, a young and creative weaver, is like a feather in the cap to the Dharmavaram saree weaving industry. His innovative themes and intricate designs with various materials woven into different patterns says it all.His idea of using the fragrance of Champa flowers in weaving a silk saree has won him laurels too. Though he wove the saree as part of his work, the Union minister of textiles recognized his work and gave him an award.The award came as a surprise to Mohan. “I was informed by Dharmavaram RDO Prabhakar Pillai that I had won an award for this creation of mine,” he recalled. Mohan desires to make Dharmavaram Silk Sarees famous worldwide.Not only to fragrance of a saree, Mohan gives importance to the design too.Some of his works include lighting saree, gandham saree, mayuri saree, Ashok chakra, Brahma Kamalam, Pushpavallika saree, musical Saree, Navaratnala saree, Udaya Kanti saree, Vijayaratna Saree and Divya Abharana Cheera.Mohan’s CreationsThe lighting saree is made of 20 different micro-lights woven into the saree.These lights are run on a 9-volt battery, which is also woven beautifully into the saree.The wiring for the lights is woven into the Zari while the controls (on/off) have been incorporated into the pallu.The micro-bulbs can glow for two and a half hours at a stretch.“There is a huge demand for this saree which costs Rs. 20,000,” Mohan said.The Gandham Saree is designed with small motifs and intricate designs made of sandalwood imported from Mysore.
