T’Puram: The beachfront would throb with all merriment and fervour of Onam in the coming days with ‘Kadalolam Onam’, the 10-day festival to be held at Shanghumugham.
The first-of-its kind venture by District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), was thrown open to the public on Friday. Deviating from the usual way of centralising the Onam festives to the city alone, the decision to extend the celebrations to Shanghumugham was taken with a view to exploring the tourism potentials of the place.
“Lot many people spent time at the beach in the evenings. Still, the place with such a huge public attention has not utilised its potentials to the fullest by hosting a befitting event. By organising such a big event, we aim to attract more people to the place along with an overall development of the area. We expect the event to be a great success as the place offers much convenience for visitors comprising the serene atmosphere and availability of parking lots,” says O T Prakash, secretary of District Tourism Promotion Council.
‘Beach Park’ of DTPC at Shanghumugham would be the main venue for the event. An amusement park has been set up to attract adults and kids alike. According to DTPC secretary, the initial response to the park with lot many modern rides, which started functioning two days ago was good.
The organisers said that the ride, ‘Tera Tera’, would arrive to the state for the first time. Nearly 40 different rides would be awaiting the visitors.
The ‘Abracadabra Fusion Cave’ has specially been made for the fest. ‘Ice World’ would be another attraction. Magic show, exhibition of flowers and fruits, display of ornamental fish, exhibition-cum-sale of products too would be held. Game shows and competitions would be conducted for children on all days. At the special counter opened for ‘payasams’, arrangements have been made for visitors to learn payasam making too. A wide range of delicacies would be made available at the food festival.
Winners could get prizes worth lakhs including a Tata Nano car. Cultural events too have been arranged in the evening on all days. The fest would conclude on September 2. ENS
