The Election Commission on Thursday withdrew its decision to hold bypoll to a Rajya Sabha seat in Jharkhand which fell vacant following the resignation of a TMC member after it was brought to its notice that a petition against the election is pending in the High Court.
"It has been brought to the notice of the Commission that there is an election petition pending in the High Court of Jharkhand against the election of Kanwar Deep Singh to the Council of States, whose resignation on February 19 caused the said vacancy.
"Having regard to this fact, the Commission has decided that the by-election to the Council of States in Jharkhand to fill up the said vacancy shall not be held till the disposal of the Election Petition," the EC said in a statement.
The Commission had announced by-elections to fill up eight existing vacancies in the Rajya Sabha.
