Efforts made to halt CBI probe in Yanam scam

Communist Party of India’s (CPI) local unit secretary, R Viswanathan, had charged that efforts were being made to scuttle the CBI investigation into the alleged irregularities involving funds for constructing a 12-km flood protection wall along the Godavari in the Yanam region of the Union Territory.

It may be recalled the project proposal was approved in 2007 by the then Congress government in UT, and was sent to the Centre without any proper channel. The proposal forwarded to the Centre allegedly carried the forged signature of the Regional Executive Officer. The CBI is now investigating the case, wherein a lower level officer is suspected to have forged signature of the Regional Administrator and forwarding proposal to New Delhi. Based on the forged proposal, Government of India sanctioned around `10 crore for the project.

Alleging that the Congress MLA from Yanam was trying to scuttle the CBI probe using the influence of a union Minister from Puducherry,

Pointing that P Kannan, has raised the issue in Rajya Sabha, Viswanathan said that Congress must make their stand clear.
