BANGALORE: BBMP Executive Engineer Vendon was arrested by the Bangalore Metropolitan Task Force (BMTF) late on Thursday night in connection with the investigation of Rs1,539 crore scam. The engineer belonging to Gandhinagar division was arrested and detained at Ulsoor Gate Police Station. Inspector General of Police of BMTF R K Sharma confirmed that he was ‘arrested according to the law’. “We do not have adequate resources in the BMTF police station. Hence we took him to the Ulsoor Gate Police Station. He has been medically examined and will be produced before a Magistrate within 24 hours as per the law,” he explained on Friday afternoon. Later, he was remanded in judicial custody.Meanwhile, factions in BBMP held different positions regarding Vendon’s arrest. While the ruling party maintained that the engineer was only being taken into custody for questioning and not arrested, the Opposition termed it an ‘illegal detention’.Opposition leader M Udayashankar said the engineer was called on the pretext of examining road works and then detained at the Ulsoor Gate Police Station throughout the night. The crux of the Opposition’s allegation was that Vendon belonged to the Gandhinagar constituency which is a Congress foothold. “Why have they not arrested the Executive Engineer in Malleswaram or the one in Rajarajeshwari Nagar? Both of them are said to be involved in the scam,” he charged.
