GURUVAYUR: The thidappalli and chuttambalam of the Chowalloor Siva Temple were reduced to ashes in a major fire which broke out on Tuesday night. It is suspected that the fire erupted from the cooking area. Involvement of ‘miscreants’ was ruled out by the police and forensic specialists.The fire, which broke out around 10.30 pm, was brought under control after three hours by the Fire and Rescue Services personnel from Kunnamkulam and Guruvayur. Spreading of fire into the sanctum sanctorum and temporarily-constructed pandal was timely blocked by the rescue team. The temple was closed by 8.30 pm after the regular poojas. No casualty has been reported. Thrissur MP P C Chacko, who visited the temple, convened a meeting of the authorities and after a telephonic discussion with the Chief Minister, announced that funds shall be provided for the renovation of the temple on a war-footing.Guruvayur MLA K V Abdul Khader and Guruvayur Devaswom chairman T V Chandramohan also visited the temple.Vasthu expert Kaanippayyur Unni Namboothiri, who is assigned for the renovation consultation, visited the place. He will file the estimate for reconstruction within two days. Over 30 teakwood rafters were gutted and total roofing is essential, the temple officials said.The temple will be opened for devotees after two days, they said.
