MADURAI: Police had to open fire in Paramakudi on Sunday as the mob went out of control, said S George, ADGP (L O) on Monday.
George, who reached the city on Sunday night, held a lengthy discussion at the airport itself with his officers, including CoP P Kannappan and SP Asra Garg. After visiting the injured cops in private hospitals here on Monday, George said that what was reported in the dailies about the series of incidents, which led to the use of fire arms in Paramakudi, were fact. "Police tried their best to restrain the agitating mob at Paramakudi. However, the situation was out of control", George said.

The mob was also furious and many vehicles were burnt and the police had to open fire against the rioters, he said.

On the politicians terming the police firing as brutal action and the failure in security plans chalked for the annual event, he preferred not to respond. Similarly, he did not make any official comment on the number of casualties in the gun firing.

The ADGP also visited Inspector Gajendran, who was assaulted by rioters at Chinthamani near Madurai admitted in another hospital.
