KOCHI: The Children’s Park in Fort Kochi is no longer a favourite destination of the young ones because of its outdated entertainment facilities. The Lions Club of Kochi has decided to discuss the matter at a board meeting here on Tuesday. During the meeting, issues like incorporation of safety features in the park for the benefit of children will be discussed, sources said. The club aims to allocate funds for the park in its next fiscal budget. Since the land belongs to the Kochi Corporation, the club will need the permission of the local body before taking up any project in the park. The proposal would be placed before the board as its clearance is mandatory, sources said. The park situated in the heart of the Fort Kochi tourism zone is lying in a neglected state for a long time after differences cropped between the club and the local body about a decade ago, club sources said. The club had been taking care of the park since the early 1970s. All expenses regarding the maintenance of the park like the lamps, entertainment equipment and other things were taken care of by the club, sources said. However, the local body’s attitude of ignoring the club while taking up the Fort Kochi master plan irked its managers. The Corporation had removed Walt Disney models put up by the club for the benefit of the children. However, as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, the club has decided to make a U-turn on its decision to ignore the park at the heritage site. The club had earlier received suggestions from chartered consultant Joseph to give the park a facelift. Most of the lamps in the park are missing and playthings are either not working or too risky to use. Due to the absence of lamps and walls, the club has become a safe haven for antisocial elements.
