CHENNAI: The State Assembly on Thursday witnessed heated exchanges between the treasury benches and the members of the main Opposition, the DMDK, over the functioning of government hospitals in Tamil Nadu. In the end, members of the DMDK staged a walkout. It all began when CH Sekar (DMDK) pointed out some shortcomings in government hospitals in certain places and said that the State government should form committees to monitor the functioning of these hospitals as done by the Uttar Pradesh government.Intervening, Health Minister VS Vijay said the DMDK member was making wild charges by highlighting a few isolated incidents. The fact was that a large number of operations were undertaken in government hospitals and sufficient stock of medicines was kept ready.Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said patients, including VVIPs, have been visiting Chennai for treatment, not only from other parts of the State, but also other countries. “While Delhi is called the political capital of the country, Mumbai is called the business capital and Chennai is the health capital,” she said and added that the administration of Health Department and the treatment given in Tamil Nadu hospitals were the best in the country and other States could emulate Tamil Nadu in this regard.Jayalalithaa said during her earlier tenure, the GH in Chennai was renovated. However, the hospital was ruined during the previous DMK regime.
