NAGAPATTINAM: Customs officials on Friday seized gold biscuits worth Rs 4.5 crore from a car at a village near Vailankanni. Two persons were arrested in this connection.Acting on a tip-off about gold being smuggled from Sri Lanka to Chennai Airport via Kodiakarai, Customs officials carried out intensive vehicle checks in the coastal area on Thursday night.They stopped the car at Paravai village, near Vailankanni, in the wee hours of Friday and found about 156 gold biscuits weighing about 15.6 kg kept concealed under the floor mat of the car. The car was coming from Kodiakadu village, near Kodiakarai, and was proceeding to Chennai Airport. The Customs officials seized the gold biscuits and arrested Anand, an occupant of the car, and Vedaiyyan, the vehicle driver. Anand is the son of Kodiakarai Shanmugam, who was arrested by the CBI in the Rajiv Gandhi Assassination case in 1991.
