CHENNAI: Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa on Saturday said that support to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s fast for communal harmony was just an expression of goodwill and there was nothing to read between the lines. Answering queries of mediapersons after paying homage to social reformer Periyar E V Ramasamy at his statue near the Gemini flyover here, the AIADMK chief said, “Narendra Modi has announced that he is going on a fast for communal harmony, peace and unity. This is also in line with our policy of secularism, communal harmony and peace. Modi spoke to me over phone and asked me to send somebody to facilitate his fast. So, I have decided to send our two MPs, M Thambidurai and V Maitreyan.”Asked whether the support meant a change in the political dynamics, Jayalalithaa said, “Not at all. You are reading too much into it. This was just an expression of goodwill and there is nothing to find fault with this fast because it is for the expressed purpose of maintaining and fostering communal peace and harmony.”Asked whether she would support Modi as a PM candidate in the 2014 poll, she said, “This is a hypothetical question. I will answer it when the situation arises.”Asked if Bangalore HC’s order — refusing further probe into the disproportionate wealth case — was a setback, she said, “Not at all.”
