New Delhi: The Centre wants to fix an age-limit for appointing judges to the Supreme Court and High Courts and wants new names vetted by all existing judges instead of just the collegium, sources have said.
This is included in the suggestions on the Memorandum of Procedure sent by the Government to the Chief Justice of India earlier this month.
CNN-News18 has learnt the Government wants chief ministers, Advocate General and Attorney General to suggest names for new appointments.
Sources said the government also wants a committee of retired or sitting judges appointed by the CJI to look into names of new appointments in the states.
The Government, it is learnt is insisting that the age-limit, once fixed, should be strictly followed.
Sources in the government denied any role in stalling appointments of judges to the higher judiciary and that from January this year four new SC judges, 52 new HC judges and 110 additional judges have been appointed.
"In January 2016 the government had written to the CJI saying the government is not averse to the process of appointment being resumed," a top source in the government, said rejecting theories that the government was going slow due to its opposition the the collegium system.
