The Uttarakhand government will give Rs 51 crore in place of Rs 11 crore announced earlier for development of a tourist circuit at Piran Kaliyar, the famed dargah of a 13th century sufi saint, near Roorkee in Haridwar district.

Giving an assurance to this effect to a delegation of Islamic scholars (ulemas) in Dehradun on Monday, Chief Minister Harish Rawat said tourist infrastructure on the lines of the Kumbh fair will be created at Piran Kaliyar for which additional funds will be given. He also assured them that another bridge will be built across the Ganga canal on whose banks the shrine is situated. Piran Kaliyar is the dargah of sufi saint of Chishti order Alauddin Ahmed Sabir Kaliyari.

It is one of the most revered shrines of Muslims in India. Adequate funds will also be arranged for projects meant for the minorities under the multi-sectoral development plan, the Chief Minister said. He directed the Secretary Minority Welfare to take steps at the earliest for payment of salaries to the Haj Committee employees and appointment to vacant posts in the Madarsa Board.

Underlining the importance of education, especially the technical education in today's world, Rawat asked the ulemas to take steps in that direction assuring them of the state government's full cooperation in this endeavour. Congratulating Rawat for his appointment as the chief minister of Uttarakhand, the Islamic scholars expressed confidence that the state would prosper under his leadership. The Muslim community expects a lot from the new Chief Minister and hopes he will rise to their expectations, they said.
