KOCHI: Expressing concern over granting permission for filling up paddy and wet lands, the High Court on Tuesday said that wet and agriculture land were required not only for cultivation but also for safeguarding the ecological balance of the state. The filling up of wet land would also cause flooding during the monsoon. The court expressed its anxiety over the actions of  district collectors, revenue divisional offices and other authorities in granting permission for filling up paddy and wet lands under the Kerala Land Utilisation Order and the Kerala Conservation of Paddy Land and Wet Land Act.“The Act had been enacted with the purpose of agricultural land  not being converted as dry land or for other purposes.  Authorities should keep the above factors in mind while considering the applications seeking to convert agriculture and wet lands,” the court said.Justice S Siri Jagan made the observation while disposing of a petition filed by Jose Antony of Kottayam against the authorities’ order including a dry land in the data bank for paddy and wet land.
