CHENNAI: The Youth Red Cross and National Service Scheme, social units of Hindustan University, observed Martyrs’ Day recently by organising a blood donation camp at the MGR Hall, Bay Range campus, Padur. The mobile units of  three organisations – the Indian Red Cross Society, Voluntary Health Service and Kilpauk Medical College – conducted the blood donation camp. It began at 9.30 am and went on till 3.00 pm.The auditorium was filled with enthusiastic young donors. The slogan for the camp was ‘Donate your blood for a reason, let the reason be life’. The camp had 354 donors, which comprised faculty members and students from various departments. The Martyr’s Day is observed in honour of the Father of the Nation and soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation. The social units of the Hindustan University take active part in social work. Earlier, the festival of lights was celebrated by the Youth Red Cross. Clothes and toiletries were distributed to patients at the Cancer Hospital, Adyar. The social units of the Hindustan University carry forward the torch of philanthropy lit by their founder and chairman, late Dr K C G Verghese. It aims to make life more meaningful and significant to every student in the campus. The programme officer of the Youth Red Cross unit was Rama Krishnasayee, assistant professor, School of Management. The programme officer of the National Service Scheme was Manivannan, assistant professor, School of Aeronautical Sciences. The blood donation camp was jointly organised by the Youth Red Cross and National Service Scheme of the Hindustan University.
