HYDERABAD: What will you do if there is an incident like a rape or a major accident on the ORR ? The question raised at a meeting between police officials and HMDA officials well before the ORR came up gains significance in the backdrop of the accident involving Mohammad Ayazuddin, son of former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin.Recalling the series of meetings police officials had with the HMDA officials before the ORR was laid, sources said in every such meeting, police officials had insisted that the plan include police stations on the 158-km stretch. “There was absolutely no security content in the project. When the HMDA officials were asked what would be the situation if there was a rape or a major accident somewhere on the stretch, the officials were blank but simply assured that they would look into the aspect. Ultimately, they never did,” the sources said.Among the suggestions on the table at the time were to have a police station for every 20 km besides deployment of highway patrol vehicles. The HMDA officials were also advised to have a few toll gates. “How can you have a 158-km long stretch without a single police station or a highway patrol? There are absolutely no checks anywhere. At least now, the government should sanction a few police stations and vehicles for highway patrolling while simultaneously sanctioning manpower,” a senior police official said.
