HUBLI: Taking exception to the farmers’ protest, traders at the APMC market in Amargol refrained from participating in the trade, following which business came to a stand-still at the market on Thursday. In the wake of fall in onion prices, farmers had staged a protest and had blocked the Hubli-Dharwad highway apart from protesting at the APMC administrative building. The farmers stating that the prices of onion had witnessed a nose dive drop from Rs 650 per quintal to Rs 250 per quintal. They accused that traders had deceived the farmers and removed the blow of the lorries transporting onions.Irked by the development, the traders refused to carry out business and refrained from participating in the tender process, while the move is being read as an attempt to suppress the agitation of the farmers.  With the trading procedure showing no signs of resuming at 11 am, heeding to the demands of farmers, APMC Secretary Patalingappa convened a meeting between the farmers and traders, where they later accepted to resume the trade from Thursday.Meanwhile, they allowed lorries from various cities to unload onion sacks at their shop premises to avoid the burden on farmers of extra hire for the lorries. APMC secretary Patalingappa said in the wake of fall in prices and protest on Thursday, hardly a few farmers had brought their produce to the market. The onion traders have assured to resume trade and the market would be open for public from Friday, he added.
