New Delhi: India's hope of advancing to the next round of the Davis Cup were dashed on Sunday when they lost 1-4 to Uzbekistan in the Asia Oceania Zone Group I tie at Namangan.
The tie was decided in the first match of the day when Denis Istomin defeated Karan Rastogi 7-6(2), 7-5, 6-1 in straight sets.
Then Murad Inoyatov completed the misery for the Indians beating Vivek Shokeen 6-3,4-6, 7-6. The last tie was of three sets only as Uzbekistan had already booked their passage into the next round.
Going into the reverse singles, Uzbekistan needed to win only one match after having taken a lead of 2-1 winning both the singles on Friday.
India had narrowed the gap when the doubles pair of skipper Leander Paes and Sunil Kumar Sipaeya beat the pair of Farrukh Dustov and Denis Istomin, Uzbekistan, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3.
