Kolkata: Islam does not support terrorism and Muslim youth should choose the 'correct path' to help the country progress, Jamiat Ulama-E-Hind Secretary General M A Madani said on Saturday.

"We Muslims are not terrorists but its those who refer to us so... Islam does not support terrorism... I would like to tell the youngsters that you are our backbone, our future.

"You should choose the right path... Good education will help us do it. Good health would help you to think better and thus help the country to flourish," he told a public meeting here.

Siddiqullah Chowdhury, state general secretary of the organisation said, "We want to stop terrorism and for that all should come together. Muslims have never supported terrorism and one should not confuse terrorism with religion."

He asked that one should not blame a community for the wrongdoings of one individual, and alleged that the state government as well as political parties have failed to contain the rise of terrorism in the state.

Chowdhury also alleged that a conspiracy was hatched to break communal harmony in the state and urged political and non-political bodies to join hands to stop it.

"I appeal to all political and non-political parties to join hands to stop the ongoing conspiracy to break the communal harmony in the state as well as in the country.

"We had invited Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, CPI-M state secretary Biman Bose, RSP, Forward Block and all other parties but none of them arrived which shows that they are not interested in containing terrorism," he charged.

Referring to the allegation of involvement of madrasas in terrorism in seven districts of Bengal which share borders with Bangladesh, Chowdhury said if the Centre gave out the names of those madrasas "We will shut them down."

Traffic was thrown out of gear inconveniencing commuters as thousands of Jamiat Ulama-E-Hind supporters marched to the Sahid Minar ground in the heart of the city.
