CHENNAI: In an attempt to impart their pioneering agriculture expertise to farmers of TN, Israel has initiated talks with the TN government to establish an excellence centre in the State. The centre would focus on flower and vegetable production apart from technologies to recycle water, Consul General of Israel in Mumbai, Orna Sagiv, said here on Monday.Addressing a press conference before meeting CM J Jayalalithaa, she said that the agreement envisaged would be a purely government-to-government initiative with no market interests. The idea of establishing a centre of excellence in Tamil Nadu was in consequence to the agreement signed with the Union government a few years back, after which invitations have come from many States for collaborations. Israel has also signed a pact with the National Horticulture Mission (NHM), she said. The diplomat said that the proposed centre in the State would aim to train farmers here on modern techniques of growing vegetables and fruits. Israel being the front-runners in irrigation and water recycling technologies, TN has shown interest in that area as well, she said. Orna Sagiv said the drip irrigation system invented in Israel has transformed into a fully automated one, with capacity to deliver right amount of fertilisers with the water. Such technologies could be replicated in terrains where water was scarce.
