NEW DELHI: Kerala government has filed a ‘Note on Submission’ before the Supreme Court-appointed Empowered Committee reiterating its demand for a new Mullaiperiyar dam. The submission, which is a detailed version of Kerala advocate Rajeev Dhavan’s arguments before the Supreme Court last week, says a new dam is the only solution to the crisis. Stating that the frequent tremors in the region have caused damage to the Mullaiperiyar dam, the affidavit says that the damage can be assessed only after a detailed examination of the dam structure. As per the submission, Kerala government has also demanded “just and equitable” sharing of Mullaiperiyar waters. According to the submission, Tamil Nadu generates `300 crore worth electricity or about 500 million units, from Mullaiperiyar waters, while it gives only `7.5 lakh to Kerala. Pointing out that Kerala is buying electricity at a rate of `6 per unit from other sources, the submission demanded an equitable sharing. Similarly, it has also demanded 1.1 TMC water from the dam, while staking its claims for fishing and tourism rights in the Mullaiperiyar waters. The note was filed on Tuesday by Kerala’s Standing Counsel advocate Ramesh Babu.
