CHENNAI: Thirty-three first-year students of Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore, who undertook a five-day bicycle journey to Chennai as part of an annual leadership summit organised by the college, reached the city on Wednesday. Having cycled all the way to Chennai from Coimbatore, they were a tired, but an enthusiastic lot.The students said that the trip went off without a hitch. Starting from Coimbatore on the evening of February 17, with overnight stops in Avinashi, Salem, Krishnagiri and Vellore, the trip covered more than 600kms exceeding the initial plan of 500kms.The theme for this year’s summit is Fearless Leadership, which will be held on March 3 at the college in Coimbatore. Managing Trustee of the college Dheepan T, who accompanied the students, said, “We have noticed that fewer engineering and business students are willing to become entrepreneurs. They rather want to settle in easy jobs.In order to inculcate the spirit of leadership in them and give a holistic approach to education, we organised the leadership summit.” “There is a lot of myths about leadership which need to be broken. The purpose of the cycling trip is to show the students that it is a long and arduous journey but it can be enjoyable,” said Dheepan. He also said that students would be taught that leadership is also about being fearless and rational while making decisions. In the first edition of the summit, held last year in Coimbatore, eminent personalities like author Chetan Bhagat, current IG of Chennai Sylendra Babu and popular TV anchor Gopinath addressed the students. This year, Dr Kiran Bedi, author Rashmi Bansal, lyricist Madhan Karky, first female space explorer Anousheh Ansari among others, will address the delegates of the summit.
