CHENNAI: Population First invites representatives from the media to send in their entries for the fourth edition of the Laadli Media Awards for Gender Sensitivity - Southern Region. The Laadli Media Awards was instituted in 2007 by Population First, an NGO supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to acknowledge and celebrate commendable efforts undertaken by various streams of media towards just gender portrayals.Dr A L Sharada, director, Population First, said, “Laadli is a comprehensive communications campaign aiming to promote a positive image of women and girls in society. We constantly engage the media, the public and policy makers in an attempt to break free from the stereotypical imagery created about the girl child and women through various activities. We work to create a just environment for women and the girl child.”“This award is part of our engagement with the media to honour and encourage them to challenge gender stereotypes. We welcome entries from media across different platforms,” added Sharada.Entries are invited from print, electronic media (TV, radio and Internet) and the advertising sector. The different categories for submission are news, news features, editorials, investigative reports, ads, jingles, blogs, public service announcements, products and services. Multiple entries, even across categories, are encouraged from individuals and media houses (group entries). Entries are invited from both Tamil and English media based in Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Andaman and Nicobar.Entries should highlight the value of the girl child and women in Indian society, challenge gender stereotypes, analyse socio-economic and political developments from a gender perspective and offer alternative perspectives to mobilise public opinion.The entries should have been published between July 1, 2010 and December 31, 2011. The last date for receiving entries for the southern region is July 15.
