As part of a continuing crackdown on the granite mafia in the southern region, police have seized several documents, with many of them pertaining to Panchami lands, from a granite major here. A land broker has also been arrested in this connection.
Police retrieved bundles of documents belonging to the firm, Madurai Granite, from two vehicles.
The action came in the wake of a case recently registered against 12 granite companies in the region, with charges pertaining to the destruction of evidence, illegally mining from government land, mining beyond the permitted limit and causing damage.
Acting on a tip-off about an Ambassador car and Maruti van parked near Kilakku Theru in Kodukkampatti near Melur, special teams rushed to the spot and seized the vehicles, along with the bundles of documents hidden inside, police said.
“All the documents are being perused by our special teams. The documents belong to Panneer Mohamed, the owner of Madura Granite,” an official confirmed.
Several of these documents related to lands purchased from the villagers by the granite firm.
The seized bundles included over 200 patta books, original land register papers, quarried granite details, sale documents, rental agreements of land and quarries, tax details, ledger books, bank account details, cheque books, property tax records and a list of the labourers and salary details.
Police suspect that all the pattas pertained to Panchami lands, given by the government to farmers under the Scheduled Castes category, which were not supposed to be sold.
A land broker, Veerayyan, was said to be the main hand in land purchase for Madura Granite, was also arrested. Speaking to Express, district SP V Balakrishnan said four teams were formed to investigate the owners. “Our investigation is continuing on the basis of the documents seized by police. The vehicles also belonged to Madura Granite,” the SP said.
