Mag coupled lamps, the latest in the City Corporation’s energy-saving pantheon, would illuminate the Manaveeyam Road in the city soon. The lights would replace the sodium vapour lamps and fluorescent lamps along the stretch.
Mayor K Chandrika had inaugurated ten mag coupled lamps on the road in front of the Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple the other day, which were set up on an experimental basis.
According to V S Padmakumar, Corporation Works Standing Committee chairman, the installation of the lamps on Manaveeyam Road may happen in three weeks’ time.
The lights are capable of saving more than 50 per cent of energy and can ensure a longevity of one lakh hours. The energy-saving lamps can work on 80 watts instead of the 250 watts consumed by sodium vapour lamps, resulting in cost-effectiveness. The light works on electromagnetic induction.
Meanwhile, the chances of putting up the lamps at Shangumugham beach are likely to be considered. “The salt content in the air is damaging the street lights there. If the mag coupled lamps are resistant in that way, the implementation can be considered,” Padmakumar said.
To study the efficiency of the functioning of the lamps, a team of delegates from the City Corporation would be leaving for Chennai, where mag coupled lamps are used for street lighting. Diaonics Automation Private Limited, a company based in Pune, is installing the lamps free of cost in the city. The lamps have a warranty of five years.
