Man carries dead child till village
A man carried his dead daughter on his shoulders as he had no money for transport to take the body to his village.

Bhopal: A poor father in Madhya Pradesh's Guna district had to carry his dead daughter on his shoulders because he had no money to pay for transporting the body to his village.

Mangilal's daughter, Savita, 13, had been suffering from fever for the past few days. Seeing no improvement even after treatment in Chachoda where he lived, he took her to Biaora for better treatment.

The girl was admitted to a government facility on Monday in Biaora, but she breathed her last the same night.

After her death, her parents somehow managed to bring her body on a bullock cart up to Binaganj.

Left with a meagre sum of Rs 150 on Tuesday, they pleaded with several people for help since the autorickshaw drivers demanded Rs 500 to take the body to his village five kilometres away.

"However, some people informed the Sub-divisional Magistrate (SDM) G S Dhurve, over phone but they were told that if the victim was prepared to bear the cost of fuel, a vehicle may be provided. On being told they had no money, the SDM hung up," a local resident alleged.

Seeing no alternative, the couple decided to carry the body themselves on foot and left the place. Later, an ambulance reached Binaganj, but it was too late by that time.

Contacted by phone later, the SDM told IANS: "Hearing the woes of the poor couple, we had immediately arranged for an ambulance but they did not prefer to wait a little."
