The Beed Police in Mumbai have arrested Baban Vishwanath Shinde, from a room near the Krishna Gopal temple of Mathura-Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh. Shinde has been accused of embezzlement of Rs 300 crores.
The arrested accused was in hiding at Vrindavan in the guise of a ‘sadhu’ (holy seer). The Vrindavan and Mumbai police conducted a joint operation to arrest him.
Baban Shinde was absconding in a case of embezzlement and fraud. The police presented him in a Mathura court and the Mumbai Police has taken him to Mumbai on transit remand. Police said that they caught Shinde from a room near the temple as soon as they reached the spot.
Mathura Superintendent of Police (City) Arvind Kumar said that a person named Baban Shinde was living in Vrindavan in the guise of a saint-mahant after committing a scam of several crores.
Baban Shinde is a resident of Beed district in Maharashtra. Baban has been accused of absconding with Rs 300 crore of Jijau Masahehb Malti State Bank. The accused has a total of five cases registered against him for cheating the depositors of Beed and Dharashiv districts of Maharashtra. The police had been on the lookout for Baban Shinde for a long time. He was traced down based on secret information.
Following the instructions of Beed Superintendent of Police Avinash Bargal, the local crime branch arrested Baban Shinde on September 24. Shinde is the main accused in the embezzlement case and his arrest is believed to speed up the investigation.
Arvind Kumar SP City said that the information about Baban Shinde had come from Maharashtra’s Crime Branch. He was arrested following a joint operation between the Vrindavan police and the Shivaji Nagar police station, where Baban Vishwanath was one of the suspects in an earlier case. Following his arrest, the Maharashtra police took him into custody.
