Manipur Police constable Herojit Singh, who confessed to have killed Sanjit Meitei, a former cadre of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), in 2009, is likely to seek security from the Centre.
The policeman, who is currently in hiding, is expected to write a letter to the Central government seeking security cover.
This comes a day after Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, had told CNN-IBN on Wednesday that the government would give security cover to Herojit Singh. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had also taken cognisance of the confessions made by Herojit to CNN-IBN.
The Home Ministry has even sought a report asking for all facts in the case.
Over six years after the killing of Sanjit Meitei, head constable Herojit Singh made the confessions on killing an unarmed terrorist in 2009, exclusively on CNN-IBN.
According to Singh, he pumped bullets into the former PLA militant acting on orders from his senior, the then Additional Superintendent of Police in Imphal. He said that he shot at Meitei with a 9mm pistol on chest.
Singh also claimed that the Manipur DGP and Chief Minister were in the know, adding that now he fears for his life.
Commandos of Manipur Police were in July 2009 accused of killing Sanjit, an alleged terrorist who had surrendered but was shot dead on a busy road in Imphal. The killing of the unarmed youth had led to protests in the state.
