New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday met armed forces chiefs at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in South Block to review the security situation in the country.
Army chief General Deepak Kapoor, Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta and Air Force chief Air Marshal Fali S Major briefed the Prime Minister about the steps taken by the defence forces following heightened tension between India and Pakistan after November's terror attacks in Mumbai.
All three wings of the armed forces are already on a state of high alert.
The meeting was also attended by National Security Advisor MK Narayanan.
Last week too, Manmoahn had called a meeting with the three defence chiefs which was also attended by Defence Minister AK Antony, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Narayanan.
During the meeting, conducted in the Indian Army’s War Room in South Block, the Prime Minister had evaluated the security preparedness across the country.
Pakistan has already cancelled the leaves of its soldiers and has threatened to move troops from its western border to the Indian border much to the discomfort of the United States of America.
Earlier, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram sent a warning to states and Airports Authority of India and security agencies against possible terror attacks at the airports.
Chidambaram also wrote a letter wrote to Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan that the state must crack down on organised crime.
He warned that the underworld could take advantage of the current situation in the state with the police concentrating on the Mumbai terror investigation.
