MADURAI: With campaign for local body elections coming to an end by Saturday evening, a news about a car of Melur MLA R Samy of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), being set ablaze in the wee hours of Sunday, triggered tension among the party cadre in the area.Samy is one of the victorious MLAs of the AIADMK as he consecutively won the Assembly elections for the third time. Though he is a native of Pathinettankudi village in Melur Taluk, he has been residing in Millgate area on Melur-Thiruvathavur Road. After winding up his campaign he returned home. At around 02.45 am, his driver Singarajan who was also in his house woke up due to smoke coming out of his Mitsubishi Pajero car. When they came to see the car, the car was set ablaze and the inner portion was completely damaged, according to Samy who spoke to Express.Further he said that he could not ascertain the reason for the incident as he did not have enmity with anyone. So, his car driver Singarajan lodged a complaint with Melur police about the incident.It was also said that there was some problem between the AIADMK and the DMK candidate of 19th ward who allegedly pasted the copies of Tamil weekly who criticised a AIADMK person of this area. But Samy was not sure whether the DMK person was behind the scene and he said that the police had already arrested him for pasting the copies.According to the Melur police, Singarajan lodged a complaint about the incident and stated that he had seen five persons who were standing near the car and setting ablaze after pouring a liquid on the car. Based on his complaint, the Melur police registered a case and further investigation is on.
