DHENKANAL: Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSCs) P L Punia on Sunday visited the Kamedhenukote village in the district and held discussions with the affected villagers. Around 21 Dalit families of the village under Dhirpatna gram panchayat were rendered homeless last month when their houses allegedly set afire by a defeated sarpanch candidate Pratap Swain and his supporters. Punia said even as the State Government has been quick in extending relief to the affected families, the rehabilitation measures and financial assistance are not adequate. He demanded the arrest of Swain at the earliest. As many as 16 persons have been arrested in this connection so far. Sources said the State Government has sanctioned compensation of ` 1 lakh each to the 21 affected families from the Chief Minister’s relief fund. This apart, the Government provided compensation of `12.15 lakh to the families on Friday. While the compensation amount was distributed among the families in the presence of ADM Babaji Charan Das, sources said more help will be provided to them with the help of the ST & SC Development Department. The villagers who have no Record of Rights (ROR) would get the same with a plot of land. Besides, the State Government would provide them with ` 90,000 under Indira Awas Yojana in a week’s time.
