BANGALORE: While the country’s sons and daughters are planning to please and honour their mother’s on Mother’s Day (May 13), a certain community of virtually active mothers across the country, are preparing to return the gift.Cybermum India blog, led by Anindita Mishra was started three years back. The activity that started as a mere blog by virtually active mothers, has now become a movement that more and more parents in the country are seeking help from. “School education today is moving towards a cyber-homework culture. Correspondingly, cyber crime against children is also increasing. In such a situation, this new culture makes children more vulnerable online,” opined Nagarathna, mother of two from the city. She further explained the need for online safety of children today. “In this day and age, it is important for parents to protect their children from not just physical dangers but virtual ones. That’s because the internet has evolved as a platform for self expression and social interaction, with children indiscriminately indulging in information exchange leading to an increasing rate of cyber crime,” explained Mishra.Further, these cyber moms will be taking a nationwide pledge to safeguard their little ones virtually. “A study commissioned by McAfee on the online behaviour of Indian children showed startling facts. Sixty two per cent of the polled children shared personal information online, 58 per cent children share their home addresses on the internet, 39 per cent children do not tell their parents about their online activities and 12 per cent of the polled children have been victims of some kind of cyber attack. The results of this study affirm that the online behaviour of children needs to be viewed seriously by Indian mothers,” revealed the survey report.
