Museums get hi-tech security cover
The CISF has upgraded security at the National Museum in Delhi and the Salar Jung Museum in Hyderabad.

New Delhi: After airports, vital government installations and historical monuments, two of the country's most prominent museums showcasing rare artifacts and jewellery have been given a hi-tech security cover.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has upgraded security at the National Museum in Delhi and the Salar Jung Museum in Hyderabad in view of a threat perception from terrorists and possible break-in bids by thieves.

Salar Jung houses the centuries-old priceless jewellery collection of the Nizam of Hyderabad, while the National Museum in the capital boasts of rare manuscripts and artifacts of historical importance.

The paramilitary force has installed hi-tech gadgets like passive infra-red motion detectors, vibration sensors and glass-break detectors to upgrade security and make it at par with museums across the world, CISF sources said.

Magnetic switches have been fixed to each glass display case to detect break-ins. And for surveillance, more cameras - flexi-mini domes, auto domes and pendants - have been put in place.

The enhanced security also means more stringent checking of visitors and long queues. Visitors will have to leave their bags outside the gallery and be frisked twice, the sources said.

Entry and exit points have been minimised to one each at both museums, which are visited by thousands daily.

A three-tier security ring has been thrown in and around the buildings, they added.
