Lucknow: The bail plea of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Sangeet Som was rejected on Monday. Som is behind the bars for allegedly circulating a hate video which is said to have led to the communal violence that claimed the lives of nearly 50 people.
He had surrendered before Uttar Pradesh Police on Saturday after receiving an arrest warrant. He had said that he is a law-abiding citizen and would therefore surrender.
Another BJP MLA Suresh Rana and BSP MLA Noor Saleen Rana have also been sent to a 14-day judicial custody.
While three legislators from opposition parties have been arrested, no action has been taken against Samajwadi party MLA Rashid Siddiqui who has also been charged with the same allegations.
Arrest warrants have been issued against several UP politicians including BJP MLAs Sangeet Som, Bhartentu Singh, Suresh Rana, Bharatiya Kisan Union leaders Rakesh Tikait and Naresh Tikait, BSP MP Kadir Rana, BSP MLAs Noor Saleen Rana, Jameel Ahmed, Congress leader and former Muzaffarnagar MP Saeed-ur-Zama, Samajwadi Party's Rasheed Siddiqui and 16 other people.
