THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Terming the new community quota system introduced for MBBS admissions in self-financing colleges as flawed, NSS general secretary Sukumaran Nair has demanded the State Government to withdraw from the agreement reached with the college managements. In a statement here, Sukumaran Nair said that last year, only the five minority colleges were allotted the community quota. As per the new agreement, 180 seats in 11 self-financing medical colleges have been set apart for communities which run the colleges. This has dealt a huge blow to students from forward communities as well as meritorious students. Certain communities have doubled their reservation benefits while others have been accorded thrice the benefits they enjoy now, he said, adding that this was against the Constitution. Earlier, only minority colleges were accorded the privilege of community quota, but now this has been extended to all 11 medical college managements. The State Government should clarify on this point, he said. The clauses in the new agreement make it clear that the government had sided with certain vested interests. This agreement will only benefit students who are stronger within the backward communities, he said. ‘’It should be thought that the State Government has betrayed brilliant students from the forward communities. The Chief Minister should intervene to dispel the fears of the parents and students as only a few days are left for the admission process to start,’’ he said.
