HYDERABAD: Ever wanted to look through a telescope powerful enough to get you a view of not just planets but also comets, exoplanets and galaxies? Well, your wish is going to be fulfilled soon. The proposed GP Birla Observatory, said to be one of the best amateur public observatories in the country, is likely to be operational later this month.Equipped with the ultra powerful C-11 telescope, designed by the Paris-based Uranoscope de France with German technology, the observatory will quench the thirst of space enthusiasts for watching celestial bodies and events. The telescope, which has been in the pipeline for the past five years, will be mounted on a building that has been specifically constructed to the required specifications. Said Dr B G Siddharth, Director of the Birla Science Center, “The project is state-of-the-art with a lot of custom-made preparations. For instance, the building had to have the right dome shape and the right altitude. As for the telescope itself, it has been constructed by the Uranoscope de France as per our specifications. It is highly specialised, equipped with charge couple devices and a computer projection device.”The entire project has cost the centre close to Rs 20 crore. The C-11 is expected to be operational by November 17.
