10.) IIT fee hike disappoints students, parents
The imminent hike in the fee structure of the Indian Institutes of Technology expected to be effective from next academic year has raised concerns among students and parents alike. The parents who aspire to send their children to the premier institutions admit it would make a huge dent on their finances.
Arun Sudarsan, an alumnus of IIT-Madras and a research scholar at the National University of Singapore, says the hike is a blow for the salaried class. “The argument seems to be that an increase in fee will bring in quality. But that is not true. In Europe, education is free. Education and health are two important factors for mobility. The hike will mean a student will have to spend Rs. 10 lakh. The average salary package after a student graduates is only Rs. 5-6 lakh or even less. Students who take loans will have to take up jobs to pay off their education loans. How will they pursue higher studies?,” he told The Hindu.
