VISAKHAPATNAM: Even after a year since the agreement inked with NTPC to set up a shorebased mega power project with a capacity of 4,000 MW at Pudimadaka village in Atchutapuram mandal in Visakhapatnam district, the state government is yet to start works on the project. The state government also signed a power purchase agreement with the NTPC to receive 50 per cent of the power (2,000 MW) generated from the proposed project. NTPC had come forward to set up the project at an estimated cost of ` 23,000 crore.According to the agreement, the state government will facilitate necessary clearances required for the project and provide the requisite land and water supply for the project. "NTPC is ready to invest the money to set up the mega power project. It is the state government which has to allocate the land. However, land acquisition works are yet to start," a senior official of the NTPC told Express.About 6,000 acres are needed to set up the proposed 4,000 MW power plant. The district administration is yet to identify the government land and land to be acquired from the people, sources said. The power project will be a significant development in that there is an ever growing demand for power in the state due to rapid industrialisation and extensive agricultural operations."There has been no communication from the collectorate on the issue of land acquisition so far. However, some extent of land from Pudimadaka village has already been acquired for the SEZ,' said MRO of Atchutapuram mandal J Sitarama Rao.
